Millie’s Diary: My Molting Journey

Welcome to "Millie’s Diary: My Molting Journey," a peek into the personal pages of our very own Swedish Flower Hen, Millie, as she navigates the ups and downs of molting season. From the initial loss of feathers to the joy of flaunting her new, lush plumage, join Millie as she chronicles her adventures and shares a few feathery tips along the way!

Day 1: The First Feather Falls

Dear Diary,

Today was the day I lost my first feather of the season. It was a tiny one from under my wing—nothing too dramatic, but enough to make me realize: molting season is here! It's like the leaves changing color for us chickens; a time of change and renewal. I felt a bit bare without it, but my human assured me this is all part of growing beautiful new feathers.

Day 7: A Bit More Bare

Dear Diary,

More feathers are starting to fall, and I must admit, it’s a bit chilly without my usual fluffy coat! My fellow coop mates are in the same boat, or should I say, the same nest? We’re all looking a bit patchy, but our human has been extra kind, giving us more treats and making sure our coop is extra cozy at night.

Day 14: The Itchy and Scratchy Show

Dear Diary,

Is it just me, or is molting itchy business? As my new feathers start to poke through, I find myself pecking and preening more than usual. But I’ve discovered a secret spot by the barn where the dust is just perfect for a dust bath. It’s my little spa retreat! It helps with the itchiness and keeps my skin healthy.

Day 21: Treats and Tricks

Dear Diary,

Our human has been giving us extra protein treats. I heard her say something about helping our feathers grow back stronger and faster. I don’t know much about that, but I do know these mealworms are delicious! Maybe losing feathers isn’t so bad if it means more treats.

Day 28: Starting to Strut

Dear Diary,

I can see my new feathers coming in now, and oh, how splendid they look! I'm starting to feel like my old self again, only fresher and even more fabulous. I caught myself strutting a bit more in front of the rooster today. I think he noticed my new look!

Day 35: Back in Full Feather

Dear Diary,

I’m fully feathered once more, and it feels wonderful. I’m warmer, fluffier, and ready to welcome the cooler days ahead. Looking around the coop, we’re all sporting our new coats, and what a sight we are! It's been a journey, but as always, change brings something beautiful.

Until next molting season, dear diary, keep your feathers fluffed and your spirits high!

Love, Millie
