A Landrace Built on Survival, Not Sameness
Swedish Flower Hens, or Svenska Blommehöns, get their name from the speckled white tips on their feathers, often called “flowers.” These markings create the wide range of patterns and color combinations the breed is known for.
They are also one of the easier birds to actually live with. Swedish Flower Hens tend to be curious, steady, and generally pleasant without being needy. They will pay attention to what you are doing, follow you around when it suits them, and then go right back to doing their own thing. They have personality, just not the kind that makes you question your life choices.
Breed Characteristics
Country of Origin: Sweden. A historic landrace developed through natural selection and practical farming.
Size: Hens average 4.5 to 5.5 pounds. Roosters average 5.5 to 7 pounds. Large, sturdy, and well-balanced.
Egg Production: Around 130 to 150 off-white to light beige eggs per year.
Egg Size: Medium to large.
Personality: Curious, social, and generally easy to work with.
Broodiness: Lower than average for a landrace, though some hens will go broody and can be capable mothers.
Climate Adaptability: Cold-hardy and adaptable, with good tolerance when provided proper shelter in warmer conditions.
Why Keep Swedish Flower Hens?
Because uniform chickens are not the goal.
Swedish Flower Hens bring genetic diversity, adaptability, and strong survival traits into a flock. Their variation in color, pattern, and even comb type reflects what a real landrace should be, flexible, functional, and capable of adapting over time.
They are excellent foragers, active without being overwhelming, and tend to integrate well into mixed flocks.
If you want birds that are both practical and visually interesting without sacrificing function, this breed delivers.
Who They’re For
Swedish Flower Hen chicks are a strong fit for:
Chicken keepers who want a true landrace with high genetic diversity
Backyard flocks that benefit from adaptable, easygoing birds
Homesteaders looking for balance between production and resilience
People who want a flock that does not look identical across the board
