A Rare, Hardy Landrace with Striking All-Black Beauty
Swedish Black Hens, also known as Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna, are one of the most eye-catching landrace breeds out there. These birds are known for their dramatic black pigmentation, feathers, skin, comb, wattles, and beak all carry that deep, smoky-black look that makes them stand out in any flock.
But they’re not just pretty. These birds are tough, alert, and shaped by generations of survival in a rugged Nordic environment. If you’re looking for a rare breed with real grit, not just novelty, Swedish Black Hen chicks are a solid pick.
Breed Characteristics
Country of Origin: Sweden. A rare heritage landrace with deep Scandinavian roots.
Size: Hens average 2.2 to 3.3 pounds. Roosters average 3.3 to 4.4 pounds. Small, agile, and sturdy.
Egg Production: Around 130 to 150 off-white to light beige eggs per year.
Egg Size: Small to medium.
Personality: Alert, intelligent, active, and somewhat independent.
Broodiness: Moderate. Many hens will go broody and can make good mothers.
Climate Adaptability: Cold-hardy and resilient, with good adaptability when given proper shelter and management.
Why Keep Swedish Black Hens?
These birds bring something special to a flock. Their naturally dark pigmentation gives them an elegant, almost otherworldly look, while their landrace roots mean they were bred by survival and function, not by chasing show standards.
Swedish Black Hens are a great fit for keepers who appreciate rare breeds, preservation-minded breeding, and chickens with strong instincts and plenty of personality. They tend to be observant and active, making them especially appealing for people who enjoy watching real chicken behavior instead of expecting every bird to act like a feathered golden retriever.
Who They’re For
Swedish Black Hen chicks are a strong fit for:
-
Chicken keepers who want a rare, preservation-worthy breed
-
Backyard flock owners who love hardy, small-framed birds
-
Homesteaders looking for alert foragers with strong landrace traits
-
Folks who think black chickens are cool as hell and would like their flock to look less basic
