Hatch a Rare Piece of Nordic History – Hardy, Independent, and Full of Heritage

Icelandic chickens, known as Íslenska Hænan in their homeland, are a rare and ancient landrace breed that has thrived in Iceland for over 1,000 years. Highly valued for their hardiness, self-sufficiency, and strong foraging instincts, these birds are a perfect fit for free-range environments. Recognized by the Livestock Conservancy as a threatened breed, adding Icelandic chickens to your flock helps preserve their unique genetics and rich history.

Breed Characteristics

  • Country of Origin: Iceland – A true landrace breed with centuries of adaptation.
  • Size: Hens ~3.5 lbs, Roosters ~5 lbs – Medium-sized but strong.
  • Egg Production: 150-180 medium white to cream eggs per year.
  • Temperament: Hardy, active, and independent—thrives in free-range settings.
  • Broodiness: Occasionally broody but excellent mothers when they hatch chicks.
  • Climate Adaptation: Exceptionally cold-hardy with moderate heat tolerance.

A Legacy of Survival

Icelandic chickens have been naturally selected for resilience over centuries, making them outstanding foragers and adaptable layers. Their diverse plumage and comb types add to their charm, making each bird one-of-a-kind.
