There are black chickens.
And then there are Swedish Black Hens.
These birds take black pretty damn seriously. Black feathers, dark skin, dark legs, dark beaks, dark combs. Then the sunlight hits them and those black feathers can light up with gorgeous green and purple sheen.
But if you're expecting every chick you hatch to grow into a carbon copy of the bird beside it, this probably isn't the breed for you.
They're a landrace.
And landraces have their own ideas about things.
This listing is for one dozen fertile Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna, commonly called Swedish Black Hen, hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
One of the best parts of hatching Swedish Black Hens is that cracking open the incubator at hatch doesn't necessarily give you a row of matching chicks.
Black is what this Swedish landrace is known for, including the extensive dark pigmentation of the skin, legs, beak, comb, and other tissues. But preservation breeding isn't a photocopier.
Our birds can produce smooth-feathered and wooly-feathered offspring, and occasionally some color shows up alongside all that black. That's the landrace part.
There's natural variation tucked into this population, and when you're hatching your own, you get to watch that variation reveal itself one chick at a time.
Which makes hatch day even harder to leave alone.
As if you needed another excuse to stare through the incubator window.
A quick clarification about the name because we've seen how easily this one can cause confusion: “Hen” is part of the English name Swedish Black Hen.
It does not mean the eggs will hatch only female chicks.
Hatching eggs can produce male or female chicks, and we cannot guarantee the sex or sex ratio of the chicks you hatch.
If only chicken genetics took requests.
You'll receive one dozen fertile Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna Swedish Black Hen hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
Photos on the listing are of our actual birds so you can see the type and variation present in our flock.
Because this is a landrace with natural variation, we cannot predict the exact pigmentation, feather type, color variation, or other characteristics of every chick you hatch.
We include extra eggs when they're available.
We can send you fertile eggs from our breeding flock.
We cannot guarantee what happens to those eggs after they leave our hands.
Shipping exposes hatching eggs to handling, vibration, temperature changes, delays, and other conditions we cannot control. Even beautifully packed eggs that arrive looking perfect may have experienced things along the way that affect development.
For that reason, we do not guarantee hatch rates on shipped hatching eggs.
Your incubator, incubation practices, egg handling after arrival, and plain old biology also play a role.
Hatching eggs is equal parts science, patience, and staring at an incubator like you can personally convince something to hatch.
Spoiler: they remain unimpressed by your supervision.

With a rare landrace like the Swedish Black Hen, our goal isn't simply producing the blackest chicken possible. We care about healthy, functional birds and maintaining the characteristics and natural diversity that make this population worth preserving.
That means we're comfortable with the fact that nature occasionally colors outside the lines.
Frankly, so are we.
We don't offer public farm visits, but the birds shown in our photos are our birds. We're also happy to share flock photos and updates so you can see where your eggs came from.
