That's part of the fun.
Put a dozen Icelandic hatching eggs in the incubator and you really don't know what those chicks are going to look like when they grow up. The colors and patterns can go in all kinds of directions, and even siblings can end up looking surprisingly different from one another.
Icelandics have never been particularly concerned with matching.
This listing is for one dozen fertile Icelandic chicken hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
Icelandic chickens, known as Íslenska hænan or Landnámshænan, are an old landrace with roots in Iceland's settlement-era agricultural history. Rather than being developed to conform to a modern breed standard, these chickens were kept as practical farm birds over generations.
That history left behind a population with a whole lot of variation.
Color can vary. Pattern can vary. Comb type can vary. Crests can appear. There isn't one specific Icelandic “look” that every chick you hatch is supposed to grow into.
Which makes staring at freshly hatched chicks and trying to predict the adults mostly an exercise in being confidently wrong.
Icelandics are also capable flyers compared with many heavier chickens, something worth remembering once those adorable incubator babies turn into chickens with opinions about where fences end.
You'll receive one dozen fertile Icelandic chicken hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
The photos in this listing show our actual birds, but they aren't a menu. We cannot guarantee the color, pattern, comb type, crest, or other appearance of the chicks you hatch.
We also cannot guarantee sex or sex ratio. That's up to genetics, and genetics has declined our request to cooperate with order notes.
When available, we may include extra eggs at no additional charge. Extras aren't guaranteed.
We sell fertile hatching eggs from our breeding flock, but fertility does not guarantee development or hatch.
Shipped eggs go through things we cannot see or control. Carrier handling, vibration, temperature exposure, delays, egg condition, storage, incubation temperature and humidity, turning, incubator performance, and plain old biology can all affect what happens after the eggs leave our farm.
Because of those variables, we cannot guarantee a hatch rate on shipped eggs.
If you've never hatched shipped eggs before, go into it knowing they're different from eggs carried from your own coop to your incubator. Sometimes you get a fantastic hatch. Sometimes you do everything right and the results still suck.

We carefully pack eggs for shipping, but no packing method can control everything that happens once a box enters the carrier system. An egg can arrive looking perfectly intact and still have experienced enough handling during transit to affect development.
With Icelandics, we're not trying to narrow the population down until every bird looks like a copy of the one beside it. The differences between birds are part of what makes this landrace worth keeping.
Our breeding decisions look beyond feather color or whichever chicken happens to be particularly pretty that day. We're maintaining a breeding population with attention to healthy reproduction, functional birds, appropriate characteristics, and the diversity already present within the flock.

The chickens shown in our photos are our actual breeding birds. We don't offer public farm visits, but we're happy to share flock photos and updates.
