Chicks are shipped USPS Priority Express and typically take 2 to 3 days in transit. Delivery is not guaranteed overnight.
Shipping live chicks carries risk. Once shipped, conditions during transit are outside of our control.
We do not offer refunds or replacements for chicks once they have been shipped.

Our HEN PICKED Chicks are exactly what they sound like. You get 10 day-old chicks from our landrace breeding flocks, and the assortment depends on who happens to be hatching when your box is packed.
Maybe you get several breeds.
Maybe one hen decided this was her week to overachieve and you get a bunch of the same breed.
The hens do not consult the packing list.
That's kind of the point.
If you like surprises, landrace chickens, and giving up just a tiny bit of control, this one's for you.
Your HEN PICKED box may contain any combination of the breeds we're currently hatching, including:
A Swedish landrace famous for the ridiculous amount of variation you can get from one flock. They're active, adaptable birds with plumage that can vary dramatically in color and pattern.
And a quick clarification because the name causes confusion: “Hen” is part of the English name Swedish Flower Hen. It does not mean you're receiving female chicks.
A Swedish landrace originating around Hedemora with a history of handling some seriously cold conditions. They're known for variation in color and feathering, including birds with especially dense feathering.
Also known as the Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna, this rare Swedish landrace is known for extensive dark pigmentation. Our flock can produce smooth and wooly feathering, and occasionally some color shows up with the black.
And just like Swedish Flower Hen, the “Hen” is part of the English breed name. It does not mean the chick is female.
A small landrace from Scotland's Shetland Islands. They're active birds with plenty of natural variation, and one of their especially fun traits is the potential for tinted, blue, or green eggs.
And yep, we've got another confusing name. “Hen” is part of the breed name Shetland Hen. It does not mean you're receiving a female chick.
An old Icelandic landrace with plenty of variation in color, comb type, and appearance. They're active foragers, and hens can have strong broody and mothering instincts.
Tiny Swedish landrace chickens from the island of Öland. They're small, quick, curious, variable in color, and entirely unaware that they're tiny.

You'll receive 10 unsexed, day-old chicks selected from the breeds listed above based on what's available from that hatch.
We do not guarantee:
You could receive several different breeds, multiples of a few breeds, or all 10 chicks could potentially be the same breed.

If there's a particular breed you absolutely have to have, buy that breed.
If opening the box and figuring out what the hell the hens sent you sounds fun, you're in the right place.
Newly hatched chicks can rely on nutrients remaining from the absorbed yolk sac during their first days of life, which is what makes shipping day-old poultry possible.
We prepare our chicks carefully for the trip, but live-animal shipping comes with things we cannot control once that box leaves our hands, including postal routing, handling, weather, and delays.
Please only order shipped chicks if you're comfortable with those realities. We do not offer refunds or replace chicks that do not survive the journey.

We're preservation-focused breeders, and the breeds in these boxes come from the same breeding flocks as the individually listed chicks we sell.
Landraces aren't supposed to produce rows of identical chickens. Natural variation in things like color, feathering, combs, size, behavior, and other traits is part of what makes these populations worth preserving.
So your HEN PICKED box isn't a curated collection designed to make every chick look different.
It's whatever the hens gave us.
Which, frankly, is more fun anyway.
We don't offer public farm visits, but the birds shown in our photos are our birds. We're also happy to share flock photos and updates so you can see where your chicks came from.

If we have extra chicks available on hatch day and there's room to safely add them to your box, we may send a few along.
We don't promise extras, and you don't get to pick what they are.
At this point you've already handed purchasing decisions over to chickens.
Might as well see this thing through.
We begin preparing your hatch as soon as your order is confirmed. That includes reserving incubator space and scheduling your hatch around the advertised ship date.
Cancellations made more than three weeks before your scheduled ship date will receive a full refund.
Cancellations made within three weeks of your scheduled ship date are subject to a $10 non-refundable preparation fee because resources have already been committed to your hatch.

Purchasing hatching eggs or chicks means you agree to those terms.
We participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), meaning our breeding birds are tested and monitored under state and federal disease-control standards. We take biosecurity seriously—because healthy chicks start long before hatch day.
