A Cold-Hardy Landrace That Actually Means It

Hedemora chickens are one of Sweden’s oldest landrace breeds, built to handle cold conditions that would shut other birds down completely.

These are not delicate, pampered chickens. They are calm, steady, and shaped by generations of survival in harsh Nordic environments. If you deal with real winters and want birds that can handle it without constant intervention, Hedemoras earn their spot.

They also happen to be some of the more easygoing birds you can keep, which makes them a rare combination of tough and pleasant to work with.

Breed Characteristics

Country of Origin: Sweden. A historic landrace developed in cold northern regions.
Size: Hens average 3.3 to 4.4 pounds. Roosters average 4.4 to 5.5 pounds. Medium-sized, sturdy, and well-insulated.
Egg Production: Around 130 to 150 off-white to light beige eggs per year, sometimes with speckling.
Egg Size: Medium.
Personality: Calm, steady, and generally easy to handle.
Broodiness: Moderate to high. Many hens will go broody and are attentive, capable mothers.
Climate Adaptability: Extremely cold-hardy. Well-suited for northern climates and winter conditions, with reasonable adaptability when given proper summer management.

Why Keep Hedemoras?

Because winter does not care about your flock plans.

Hedemoras are built with dense, insulating feathering that allows them to stay active and productive in cold conditions where other breeds struggle. Some even carry wooly feathering that adds another layer of protection.

They are not high-strung. They are not constantly testing your patience. They are steady, reliable birds that do their job without drama.

If you want a flock that can handle real weather and still be easy to manage, this is one of the best options out there.

Who They’re For

Hedemora chicks are a strong fit for:

Chicken keepers in colder climates who need birds that can handle winter
Backyard flocks that benefit from calm, easygoing personalities
Homesteaders looking for reliable, low-drama birds
People who want a hardy landrace without sacrificing temperament
