Chicks are shipped USPS Priority Express and typically take 2 to 3 days in transit. Delivery is not guaranteed overnight.
Shipping live chicks carries risk. Once shipped, conditions during transit are outside of our control.
We do not offer refunds or replacements for chicks once they have been shipped.

Some chickens are flashy because they're colorful.
Swedish Black Hens get your attention by doing the exact opposite.
Their feathers are black. Their skin is black. Their legs, beaks, and combs are dark too. Then the sunlight hits those feathers and suddenly you're seeing flashes of green and purple that weren't there five seconds ago.
They're gorgeous chickens.
But that's not the only reason we keep them.
The Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna is a rare Swedish landrace with a history much more interesting than “hey, that's a cool black chicken.” They're small, active, alert birds that pay attention to everything going on around them, and they're one of those breeds visitors tend to notice immediately.
This listing is for unsexed, day-old Swedish Black Hen chicks from our breeding flock.
The Swedish Black Hen, or Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna, is a rare landrace from Sweden known for the dark pigmentation that gives these chickens their unmistakable appearance.
But here's where the landrace part matters.
Not every bird is going to look exactly alike.
Swedish Black Hens can be smooth feathered or wooly feathered, and while black is what they're known for, sometimes you'll get a bird with a little color mixed in too.
That's not a flaw. That's a landrace doing landrace things.
There's natural variation in the population, and that's part of what makes keeping and preserving these chickens so interesting.
They're not big chickens, and they're not little lawn ornaments either.
Give them room to forage, explore, and generally stick their beaks into whatever business does not concern them.
They'll use it.
You'll receive unsexed, day-old Swedish Black Hen chicks from our breeding flock.
A quick note about the name because this one can be confusing: the “Hen” in Swedish Black Hen is part of the English name for the breed. It does NOT mean you're ordering female chicks.
These chicks are sold straight run, which means we do not select males from females before shipping. You may receive pullets, cockerels, or a combination of both, and we cannot guarantee the sex or sex ratio of your order.
Photos on the listing are of our actual birds so you can see the type and variation present in the flock.

Newly hatched chicks can rely on nutrients remaining from the absorbed yolk sac during their first days of life, which is what makes shipping day-old poultry possible.
We prepare our chicks carefully for the trip, but live-animal shipping comes with things we cannot control once that box leaves our hands, including postal routing, handling, weather, and delays.
Please only order shipped chicks if you're comfortable with those realities. We do not offer refunds or replace chicks that do not survive the journey.

We're preservation-focused breeders. With a rare landrace like the Swedish Black Hen, our goal isn't simply producing the blackest chicken possible.
We care about healthy, functional birds and maintaining the characteristics and genetic diversity that make the population worth preserving.
We don't offer public farm visits, but the birds shown in our photos are our birds. We're also happy to share flock photos and updates so you can see where your chicks came from.
When we have extras available, we may include bonus chicks with your order.
Occasionally that may mean an extra chick from another breed. If you have a preference about bonus chicks, leave us a note at checkout and we'll do our best to accommodate it.

We begin preparing your hatch as soon as your order is confirmed. That includes reserving incubator space and scheduling your hatch around the advertised ship date.
Cancellations made more than three weeks before your scheduled ship date will receive a full refund.
Cancellations made within three weeks of your scheduled ship date are subject to a $10 non-refundable preparation fee because resources have already been committed to your hatch.

We participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), meaning our breeding birds are tested and monitored under state and federal disease-control standards. We take biosecurity seriously—because healthy chicks start long before hatch day.
