Baby chicks are tiny, adorable, and remarkably bad at keeping themselves warm.
This 250W Red Heat Lamp Bulb provides radiant heat for chick brooders, creating a warm area where chicks can gather when they need it while still allowing them to move away from the heat when they don't.
The red light is also commonly preferred for brooders because it may help reduce pecking among chicks compared with brighter light.
Pair it with our Clamp On Brooder Reflector Heat Lamp. Fixture sold separately.
Set up the lamp so your brooder has a warm zone and a cooler area where chicks can move away from the heat.
For newly hatched chicks, approximately 95°F at chick level under the heat source is a common starting point, with supplemental heat gradually reduced by about 5°F each week. Watch the chicks too. Comfortable chicks spread out normally, cold chicks crowd toward the heat, and overheated chicks move away from it.
A thermometer is considerably more reliable than sticking your hand in the brooder and announcing, “Eh, feels warm.”
Use only with a properly rated porcelain or ceramic-socket heat-lamp fixture with a protective guard.
Securely suspend the fixture with a nonflammable chain or cable so it cannot fall into the brooder. Do not suspend it by the electrical cord, and don't rely on a clamp as your only protection against the lamp falling. Keep the hot bulb and fixture safely away from bedding, cardboard, wood, and other combustible materials.
Keep the bulb dry and out of reach of chicks. Allow it to cool completely before handling or replacing it, and replace damaged or cracked bulbs.
Heat the chicks.
Not the pine shavings.
Definitely not the barn.
