Chicks are shipped USPS Priority Express and typically take 2 to 3 days in transit. Delivery is not guaranteed overnight.
Shipping live chicks carries risk. Once shipped, conditions during transit are outside of our control.
We do not offer refunds or replacements for chicks once they have been shipped.

Here's the slightly ridiculous thing about buying a Shetland Hen chick: you don't know exactly what the chicken is going to look like, you don't know exactly what color egg a pullet may eventually lay, and because these chicks are straight run, you don't even know if that particular chick is going to lay an egg at all.

Shetland Hens are a rare landrace from the Shetland Islands of Scotland with plenty of natural variation in the birds and some seriously fun possibilities waiting in the future egg basket.
This listing is for unsexed, day-old Shetland Hen chicks from our breeding flock.
Shetland Hens come from the Shetland Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. They're small to medium-sized, active chickens with plenty of variation from bird to bird. This isn't a breed where we're trying to make every chick grow into the same color, pattern, or appearance.
Then there's the egg color. Shetland hens are associated with blue and green eggs, but individual hens can produce other shades too. Depending on the genetics a particular bird inherits, your eventual egg basket may include a bit of variation.
Notice all those words like “may” and “can”? They're there for a reason. We're selling you a chicken, not making it sign a contract about future egg color.
They're active birds that appreciate opportunities to forage and explore. Basically, if your idea of a good chicken is one that spends its day actually doing chicken things, Shetlands should be on your radar.
You'll receive unsexed, day-old Shetland Hen chicks from our breeding flock.
One important clarification before the word “Hen” gets anybody overly excited: Shetland Hen is the name of the breed. It does NOT mean you're buying female chicks.
Our Shetland Hen chicks are sold straight run, so you may receive pullets, cockerels, or a combination of both. We cannot guarantee the sex or sex ratio of your order, and we also can't guarantee what color eggs an individual female chick will eventually lay.
Half the fun is finding out. The other half is realizing the chick you've been mentally assigning an egg color to for three months is actually a rooster.
Newly hatched chicks can rely on nutrients remaining from the absorbed yolk sac during their first days of life, which is what makes shipping day-old poultry possible.
Once your chicks leave us, USPS controls the route, handling, and delivery timing. Weather and delays can also affect a live shipment. Please only order shipped chicks if you're comfortable with those realities. We do not offer refunds or replace chicks that do not survive the journey.
Shetlands give us plenty of reasons not to chase uniformity. We're working with a landrace population where variation is expected, and that's something we want to maintain rather than tidy up just so every bird looks alike.
That also means we aren't breeding these chickens solely around producing a particular egg color. There's more to preserving a population than what ends up in the egg basket.
Our flock participates in the National Poultry Improvement Plan and is A/I Clean under participant #31-1508, Tina Hines. The birds shown in our photos are our birds. We don't offer public farm visits, but we're happy to share flock photos and updates so you can see the chickens behind your chicks.
Sometimes hatch day gives us a few more chicks than we need to fill the orders going out. When that happens and we can safely include extras, you might open your box and discover somebody who wasn't technically on the guest list.
Extra chicks aren't guaranteed, and an extra may occasionally be another breed. If you have strong feelings about that, leave us a note at checkout and we'll do our best to accommodate your preference.
Once your order is confirmed, we reserve incubator space and add your hatch to our schedule. Cancellations made more than three weeks before the scheduled ship date receive a full refund.
Cancellations within three weeks of the scheduled ship date are subject to a $10 non-refundable preparation fee because we've already committed resources to your hatch.

We participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), meaning our breeding birds are tested and monitored under state and federal disease-control standards. We take biosecurity seriously—because healthy chicks start long before hatch day.
