One of the best things about hatching Swedish Flower Hens is watching the chicks grow up and slowly reveal what they're going to look like.
Because the egg sure as hell isn't telling you.
Swedish Flower Hens, or Svenska Blommehöns, are a Swedish landrace known for their tremendous variety of colors and patterns, often finished with the white-tipped feathers that give them their “flowered” appearance. Hatch several chicks from the same flock and you can end up with birds that look remarkably different from one another.
This listing is for one dozen fertile Swedish Flower Hen chicken hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
Swedish Flower Hens originated in Sweden as practical farm chickens rather than birds developed around a rigid appearance standard. Their Swedish name, Svenska Blommehöns, refers to the flower-like effect created by the white tips or mottling on their feathers.
There's no single correct base color hiding underneath those flowers. Swedish Flowers can show a wide range of colors and combinations, which means hatching them comes with a built-in surprise.
And the changes don't stop at hatch. Chick down can only tell you so much. Watching the feathers come in and the adult pattern develop is half the fun.
They tend to be curious chickens too. Chet, one of our Swedish Flower Hens, took that personality all the way to following me around, hanging out at the shop, and perching on my shoulder.
She also crowed and had us convinced she was a cockerel until DNA testing proved otherwise.
Chickens will keep you humble.

Quick clarification because “Hen” is right there in the breed name: Swedish Flower Hen does NOT mean these eggs will hatch female chicks. Eggs may hatch males, females, or a combination, and we cannot guarantee sex or sex ratio.
The photos in this listing show birds from our actual flock, but we cannot guarantee the colors or patterns you'll hatch. We aren't selecting individual eggs based on what we think the resulting chick will look like.
Honestly, if we could look at an egg and predict the finished chicken, I'd probably get absolutely nothing else done.
When available, we may include extra eggs at no additional charge. Extras are never guaranteed.
We sell fertile hatching eggs from our breeding flock, but fertility does not guarantee development or hatch.
Shipped eggs go through things we cannot see or control. Carrier handling, vibration, temperature exposure, delays, egg condition, storage, incubation temperature and humidity, turning, incubator performance, and plain old biology can all affect the outcome.
Because of those variables, we cannot guarantee a hatch rate on shipped eggs.
Sometimes shipped eggs hatch beautifully. Sometimes you can do everything right and still have a disappointing hatch. That's one of the frustrating realities of incubating eggs that have traveled through a carrier system.

We carefully pack our hatching eggs for travel, but even excellent packing can't control every bump, temperature change, delay, or enthusiastic package toss after the box leaves our hands.
The variation in Swedish Flower Hens is one of the reasons we keep them, so we're not interested in breeding that variation out just to produce a flock where everybody matches.
We're also not selecting solely for whichever colors or patterns happen to be the prettiest. Appearance matters, but so do healthy reproduction, functional birds, appropriate breed characteristics, and maintaining diversity within the population.
