His name is Clancy.

He's our rooster, our mascot, and living proof that a chicken can be approximately 25% feathers and 75% opinions.

So yeah, we're a little partial to this breed.

Ölandsk Dwarfs are tiny Swedish landrace chickens with wildly variable plumage, plenty of personality, and a history worth preserving. They're small chickens, but there's absolutely nothing boring about them.

This listing is for one dozen fertile Ölandsk Dwarf hatching eggs from our breeding flock.

About the Ölandsk Dwarf

The Ölandsk Dwarf comes from the Swedish island of Öland, where these little chickens were once common farm birds. Today's preserved population traces primarily to two strains, Petgärde and Asklunda.

And this is a landrace, not a breed developed to make every bird look exactly alike.

That's part of the fun.

Plumage can include different shades of brown, wild color, black, and white, often with white feather tips. Individual birds can look surprisingly different from one another, which means hatching a dozen is a little like opening a box of chicken-shaped mystery prizes.

Breed Characteristics

Origin: Öland, Sweden
Type: Swedish landrace
Hen weight: approximately 1.1 to 1.8 pounds
Rooster weight: approximately 1.3 to 2.2 pounds
Egg color: bone-white to light beige or slightly brownish
Egg size: approximately 35 grams
Egg production: around 130 eggs per year for hens that aren't brooding
Broodiness: fairly strong, with many hens willing to set when given the opportunity
Appearance: highly variable brown, wild-color, black and white plumage, often with white feather tips
Build: small, sturdy and active

One of the things we love about landraces is that variation isn't something that needs to be “fixed.” Maintaining useful traits, healthy flock behavior, appropriate size, reproduction, and the diversity within the landrace matters more than breeding every chicken toward one perfect color pattern.

That's preservation breeding.

And sometimes it produces a rooster like Clancy.

You'll receive one dozen fertile Ölandsk Dwarf chicken hatching eggs from our breeding flock.

Photos on the listing are of our actual birds so you can see the kind of variation present in our flock. Because this is a variable landrace, we cannot predict exactly what colors or markings you'll hatch.

We include extra eggs when they're available.

A Very Important Thing About Hatching Eggs

We can send you fertile eggs from our breeding flock.

We cannot guarantee what happens to those eggs after they leave our hands.

Shipping exposes hatching eggs to handling, vibration, temperature changes, delays, and other conditions we cannot control. Even beautifully packed eggs that arrive looking perfect may have experienced things along the way that affect development.

For that reason, we do not guarantee hatch rates on shipped hatching eggs.

Your incubator, incubation practices, egg handling after arrival, and plain old biology also play a role.

Hatching eggs is equal parts science, patience, and staring at an incubator like you can personally convince something to hatch.

Off-site local pickup may be available

Our Breeding Flock

Our flock participates in the National Poultry Improvement Plan and is A/I Clean under participant #31-1508, Tina Hines.

We're preservation-focused breeders. With landrace chickens like the Ölandsk Dwarf, our goal isn't to manufacture identical birds. We care about maintaining the characteristics that make the population worth preserving in the first place.
