Shetlands are nosy little chickens.
Not obnoxious nosy. More like, “Oh, you're doing something? We should probably come see.”
Ours are incredibly curious and friendly. They're the kind of chickens that notice when you're around, come over to investigate, and seem genuinely interested in whatever you're doing. If you enjoy chickens that actually interact with you instead of scattering the second you walk into the coop, Shetlands are a whole lot of fun to have around.
They're a rare landrace from the Shetland Islands of Scotland, with plenty of natural variation from bird to bird and personalities that have made them one of those breeds we genuinely enjoy keeping.
This listing is for one dozen fertile Shetland Hen chicken hatching eggs from our breeding flock.
Shetland Hens come from the Shetland Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. They're active, alert chickens from a landrace population where variation between individual birds is expected.
One of the particularly interesting things about Shetlands is egg color. Hens can produce blue, green, with the occasional tinted brown/white egg layer, which can make for a pretty interesting future egg basket if you're hatching and raising a group.
But there's an important word in that sentence: can.
We cannot look at a hatching egg, chick, or young pullet and promise exactly what color eggs that individual bird will eventually lay.
Apparently chickens weren't interested in making this convenient.
Shetlands are active chickens that appreciate opportunities to move, explore, and forage. They're a good fit for somebody who enjoys watching chickens be chickens rather than expecting every bird in the flock to behave or look exactly alike.

And here's our obligatory clarification before the breed name causes trouble: “Hen” is part of the name Shetland Hen. It does NOT mean the eggs you're ordering contain female chicks.
Eggs may hatch pullets, cockerels, or a combination of both. We cannot guarantee sex or sex ratio.
We also cannot guarantee the appearance of the chicks you hatch or the future egg color of any females you raise. The photos in this listing show our actual birds and give you a look at the flock your eggs are coming from, not a catalog of outcomes you can select.
When available, we may include extra eggs at no additional charge. Extras are not guaranteed.
We sell fertile hatching eggs from our breeding flock, but fertility doesn't guarantee development or hatch.
Once eggs enter a carrier system, they're exposed to variables we can't control. Handling, vibration, temperature changes, delays, egg condition, storage, incubation temperature and humidity, turning, incubator performance, and plain old biology can all affect the outcome.
Because of those variables, we cannot guarantee a hatch rate on shipped eggs.
Sometimes shipped eggs give you a fantastic hatch. Sometimes they don't, even when you've done everything right. That's frustrating as hell when it happens, but it's part of the reality of hatching eggs that have traveled through the mail.

We carefully pack our hatching eggs for travel, but packing can only protect them so far. We can't control how a carrier handles the box, what temperatures it encounters, or how long it spends getting from our farm to your incubator.
We're not breeding Shetlands solely to chase one particular egg color. A blue or green egg is fun to find in the nest box, but there's an entire chicken attached to the reproductive system that made it.
Our breeding decisions consider healthy reproduction, functional birds, appropriate breed characteristics, and the natural variation within the population. We're maintaining the flock as more than a source of pretty eggs.
Our flock participates in the National Poultry Improvement Plan and is A/I Clean under participant #31-1508, Tina Hines. The chickens shown in our photos are our actual birds.
We don't offer public farm visits, but we're happy to share flock photos and updates so you can see the chickens behind your hatching eggs.
