A Historic Landrace from the North – Hardy, Independent, and Full of Character

Icelandic chickens, known as Íslenska Hænan or Landnámshænan, are a rare and ancient landrace breed that has thrived in Iceland for over 1,000 years. With their strong foraging instincts, unique feather patterns, and extreme cold-hardiness, these birds are a fantastic choice for homesteaders, conservation breeders, and free-range setups. Recognized as threatened by the Livestock Conservancy, adding Icelandics to your flock helps preserve a piece of poultry history.

Breed Characteristics

• Country of Origin: Iceland – A true landrace breed with deep Nordic roots.
• Size: Hens ~3.5 lbs, Roosters ~5 lbs – Medium-sized but hardy.
• Egg Production: 150-180 medium-sized white to cream eggs per year.
• Personality: Hardy, active, and independent—thrives in free-range environments.
• Broodiness: Occasionally broody but excellent mothers when they do hatch chicks.
• Climate Adaptability: Exceptionally cold-hardy, with moderate heat tolerance.

Bred by Viking settlers and shaped by Iceland’s harsh landscapes, these birds are natural survivors, making them one of the toughest breeds available. Their vibrant genetic diversity means no two Icelandic chickens look exactly alike, creating a beautifully varied flock.

Chick Ordering & Shipping Details

• Shipped at One Day Old – Chicks are shipped unvaccinated and ready to grow in their new home.
• Straight Run Only – Chicks are sold unsexed, allowing you to discover their genders as they mature.
• Minimum Order of 6 Chicks – Start your flock with at least six chicks, or mix and match breeds for variety.
• Safe, Express Shipping – Chicks ship on Tuesdays via USPS Priority Express at a flat rate of $75, ensuring swift and secure delivery.
• Local Pick-Up Option – Pick up your chicks in person at our designated off-site location on the advertised ship date.

• Extra Chicks When Available – We include bonus chicks when possible to add to your excitement.
• NPIP-Certified & A/I Clean – Our flock meets National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) standards under participant #31-1508 (Tina Hines).
• Virtual Farm Connection – While we do not offer public farm visits, we share photos, video chats, and personalized customer support to help you feel connected to your chicks’ origins.

Preserve a Piece of Poultry History

Before You Order:

We start preparing your hatch as soon as your order is confirmed. That means reserving incubator space and putting your hatch on the schedule.

If you cancel more than 3 weeks before your scheduled ship date, there’s no fee and we’ll issue a full refund.

If you cancel within 3 weeks of your scheduled ship date, a $10 non-refundable prep fee will apply. At that point, your eggs have likely already been set, and we’ve invested time and resources into your hatch.

We’re not a factory farm and every chick matters. Thanks for understanding and helping us do this the right way.
