The Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna, or Swedish Black Hen, is a rare and striking landrace breed known for its elegant all-black appearance. With black feathers, comb, wattle, beak, legs, and even skin, these birds are a true standout in any flock. Intelligent and alert, they are resilient, cold-hardy, and adaptable, making them a unique and hardy choice for backyard chicken keepers and conservation breeders alike.

Breed Characteristics

• Country of Origin: Sweden – A rare Scandinavian landrace.
• Size: Hens ~3 lbs, Roosters ~4.5 lbs – Sleek yet sturdy.
• Egg Production: 100-150 small to medium light brown eggs per year.
• Personality: Intelligent, alert, and somewhat independent—observant but not overly demanding.
• Broodiness: Occasionally broody, with good maternal instincts.
• Climate Adaptability: Cold-hardy with some heat tolerance, making them adaptable in various climates.

Chick Ordering & Shipping Details

• Shipped at One Day Old – Chicks are shipped unvaccinated and ready to grow in their new home.
• Straight Run Only – Chicks are sold unsexed, allowing you to discover their genders as they develop.
• Minimum Order of 6 Chicks – Start your flock with at least six chicks, or mix and match breeds for a diverse backyard flock.
• Safe, Express Shipping – Chicks ship on Tuesdays via USPS Priority Express at a flat rate of $75, ensuring they arrive quickly and safely.
• Local Pick-Up Option – Pick up your chicks in person at our designated off-site location on the advertised ship date.

• NPIP-Certified & A/I Clean – Our flock meets National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) standards under participant #31-1508 (Tina Hines).
• Virtual Farm Connection – While we do not offer public farm visits, we share photos, video chats, and personalized customer support to help you feel connected to your chicks’ origins.

Before You Order:

We start preparing your hatch as soon as your order is confirmed. That means reserving incubator space and putting your hatch on the schedule.

If you cancel more than 3 weeks before your scheduled ship date, there’s no fee and we’ll issue a full refund.

If you cancel within 3 weeks of your scheduled ship date, a $10 non-refundable prep fee will apply. At that point, your eggs have likely already been set, and we’ve invested time and resources into your hatch.

We’re not a factory farm and every chick matters. Thanks for understanding and helping us do this the right way.
